Fates Intertwined

The small italien restaurant was tucked between an antiques shop and a used-books store. In addition it was across that street from the neighborhood deli. A simpley lettered sign proclaimed the name "Far Italy". In short, it looked exactly like what it was. The best kept secret in the city.

Bobby openned the door and waved Andreana inside. He didn't notice the odd look on her face as she walked through the doorway. Inside was one of the "Please wait to be seated" signs, just like you could find in any restaurant across the country. One thing made it stand out. In one corner someone had stuck a large yellow smiley face sticker.

Ann (note to readers, Ann is short for Andreana. They're the same person) glanced at the sticker and smiled. She'd been coming here for a long time, and it never stopped to make her do that. She looked around the restaurant, trying to find someone she knew.

No one. She glanced at her watch. 11:53. No wonder she didn't recognize anyone. She never ate lunch till after 1:00. Ann sighed and looked around hopefully. Maybe someone had come in early. She noticed a waiter standing towards the back of the restrant. She smiled. She'd known Jeff since, well,...forever. She was about to wave and catch his attention when she realized that he was staring in her direction. She glanced around. No one in the immediate area excapt Bobby and herself. She looked back to see Jeff ducking into the kitchen. And she thought she'd cornered the market on odd behavior. Rather then try and figure it out, she turned to Bobby.

"So, you eat here a lot?"

"I try to come at least once a week. I usually make it two or three times if I'm not out of town."

"Wait a minute! Did you just say you come here two or three times a week?"

"Well,...yeah, why?"

"That means that you're the other....I don't believe this. I really don't. That would explain why Jeff...God, this must be karma, or fate, or something"

"Ann?" When she didn't answer him, Bobby grabbed her by the shoulders and gave her a little shake. "Ann!"

"Yeah?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Ummmm, maybe I should explain?"

Bobby smiled. "I think that's an excellent idea."

"I usually come here for lunch. It's resonably priced, close to work, and serves something besides hamburgers." Bobby gave a quiet chuckle. "Anyway, one day I was talking with a few of the waiters about other regualr customers. Someone mentioned that there was really only one other person who came as often as I did. I've always wanted to meet him...you, but there was the problem of the time difference."

Andreana laughed at Bobby confused expression. "Bobby, what time do you usually eat lunch?"

"About noon or a little before."

"Like I said, time difference. I count it as a huge plus if I make it here before three."

Bobby nodded his understanding. Their schedules had simply never allowed them to meet. Running (or skating) into one another in the park had simply been dumb luck.

"Excuse me, can I show you to a table?"

Bobby looked at the waiter. "I don't know, can you?"

Threatening Postures

Bobby nervously sipped his water. He wasn't thirsty, but he had the urge to do something, anything. He wished he'd asked for a menu. Not that he needed one; he wanted something to hide behind. Here he was with a beautiful, intellegent woman, and he couldn't believe it. He kept finding himself staring at her, wondering if this was all some crazy dream.

"Hey, Bobby, Ann. Smile!"

Bobby looked up to find himself facing a camera lens. click He blinked to clear the spots from his vision. Damn flash. When he could finally see again, he looked up to see a familiar face smiling at him.

"Jeff, what do you think you're doing?"

The young waiter laughed. "Why, recording history, of course. The best part is, I don't have to set the two of you up on a blind date now."

Ann just shook her head. "I take it you know this lunatic."

He shrugged. "Unfortunatly, yes. Though I wish I could say otherwise."

"I know what you mean."

"Hey! No fair talking about me like I'm not here." The young man pulled up a chair, and sat down, ignoring the hostile stares from the table's two residents. "Ok, Drake, normally I'd be warning you that if you hurt Ann in anyway, I will personally see to it that you die slowly and painfully. However, there are two reasons I'm not going to do that this time. One, I'd hate to lose a good friend like you, and two, knowing your track record, it's more likly that Ann will hurt you then the other way around."

Jeff stood up and returned his chair to it's table. "Now, can I get you anything?"
