Seeking Peace pt 12

"You've gotta be kiddin'." Logan looked at her with disbelief widening his eyes.

She took a deep breath to rally her defenses. She had known this wouldn't be easy. "I want to be prepared. In this day and age a woman had to be able to protect herself."

"I'll buy that but why now? You worked with the police. You can't tell me you haven't had any training." His gaze dared her to deny it.

She met his stare squarely refusing to back down. She was prepared for his resistance. "Defense training is not the same as combat training and you know it." He nodded in agreement. Sensing her opening she went for the punch line. "I need help and fast. Your fighting skills are second to none. It seemed logical to ask you." She hoped that he would hear the sincerity of her words.

"How's Gumbo feel about this?" He looked a trifle smug and curious.

He would have to ask. She wondered if she could skirt the issue. Nope, his expression was telling her he could smell the bull a mile away. Truth it is. "He doesn't know." Logan raised his eyebrows prompting Kyler to explain. "I am afraid if I asked him for help he would go easy on me. If I told him I was going to ask you he might interfere. I've only had two weeks with him. I don't want to waste what remaining time we have going round over this."

"You planing on leaving when this is over?"

A lumped formed in her throat over his question. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed in her chest. No doubt about it, she was falling for Remy. Kyler turned her focus toward Logan and tried to answer him. She couldn't manage a verbal response so she nodded.

"Maybe for the best." He liked it better when her eyes were filled with exasperation not sadness. He tried for an insulted expression. "What makes you think I wouldn't be easy on you?"

She snorted. "I think you would enjoy throwing me across the room. This is the perfect opportunity to make my life miserable. In fact, I am asking you to."

It worked. She was back to holding her misery in check. "I don't want to make you miserable, kid. It's true I don't think you belong here. You could get hurt. We can handle it our selves."

Kyler's eyes flamed with anger. Cerebro was their mutant locator/computer. It was advanced beyond anything she had ever worked with previously but it still a computer. She worked day and night for three days until she had mastered its workings. She could sup that puppy up better than Hank.

"I am not going anywhere." The words were forced out past clenched teeth. She did a mental count of ten to calm herself before she began again. "I suppose eventually Hank or Remy could have figured out how to reset the search perimeters on Cerebro more effectively. It would have taken them awhile to figure it out but I guess you have time to spare, don't you?"

She didn't give him a chance to respond. "And I suppose that one of you could have enhanced Cerebro's processors or written the program that enabled Cerebro to...."

"Okay, Okay, I get your point." He held up his hands in mock resignation "You're a computer genius. You've been pulling your weight. It's not like you'll be going on any missions anyway." He rubbed the back of neck as he talked. He liked the kid. It wouldn't hurt anything to show her a few moves. "We'll start tomorrow. Proper training never hurt anyone."

"Thank you, Logan." She was relieved. She would get the training she needed. It would help when she had to battle the group to go face Sinister with them.
