Seeking Peace pt 18

By Jenna

Pregnant? Pregnant! This was unreal. How? Scratch that thought. She knew exactly how. One horny girl, one hunky guy, no protection, voila...Baby.

How could she have been so careless? She read the papers. Safe sex was hip now. Isn't that what the starlet's say as they hold a little foil pack in their hand. She should have paid more attention.

She was twenty-three not sixteen. She couldn't even use the ignorance excuse. She saw Remy and wanted him, period. She fell at his feet in a hormonal heap. Okay, maybe it had been a year since her last affair but that wasn't a good reason not to think of love gloves or little pills. Now she was going to face the consequences.

Would it really be that bad? She didn't think so. She loved Remy. She loved this baby. Being pregnant wouldn't be hard. Well, beyond the swollen belly and toes Hank told her to expect. The nausea, the potty breaks every fifteen minutes, the emotional outbreaks weren't going to be cake work but they were survivable. She had been wondering why she had been so emotional lately, now she knew.

Figuring out whether or not to tell Remy was the rough part. On one hand, he had the right to know. For all she knew, he might enjoy having a miniature Gambit running around. She had to smile at the mental imagine of a little girl in pigtails following her Daddy around blowing things up. Great, another worry. How would the mutant factor enter this? She decided to put that worry aside for a moment. Back to the Remy worry.

Where was she? Oh, yes, the other hand, it was a biggy. He didn't love her. She would rather die than force him into a situation that he didn't want. God, what if he thought she was trying to trap him? What if he wanted to do the noble thing and resent her all the while?

A spark of hatred flared to life within her heart for the mysterious Sinister. Her life had been so simpler before he started playing with it. What was she going to do?

She had some time at least. She had an irregular cycle so they had to rely on the ultrasound for a due date. It placed her at five weeks along. Apparently, she was raring to go for more than sex when she walked into Remy's life. Either that or his mutant X-factor supercharged his sperm.

"Hey, kid. How are you feeling?"

She looked up to see Logan towering over her. "Why am I always look up at you? Isn't it enough that you are responsible for me being on my backside the majority of the time in the Danger Room? Is it really necessary for you to seek me out when I am on my butt as well?"

"Saw you headin' for the dock. I wanted to make sure you were okay." He straightened back up and turned to leave.

He didn't deserve her peevish attitude. She jumped up to stop his departure. "Wait! Logan, please, I am sorry. I'm a little snappy today. Please sit down. I came out here to think."

"Do you always waste a perfectly good sunset with thinkin'?" He sat down stretching his legs out in front of him.

"I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't even paying attention to it. I just wanted some privacy."

"You goin' start cryin' again?" He was not looking forward to another crying jag.

"I hope not."

He wasn't comforted by that response. He was a beserker, not a hankie. Even with his experience with the opposite sex, the whole female emotional blitz was beyond him. He wondered if any guy could understand it. "Wanna talk about it?" She was a friend. He had to offer even if it meant she would start crying again.

"No."

There IS a God.

"Can I ask you something?" She was staring into the lake waters.

He knew the pull of the water. Unfortunately, he knew that although the waters could sooth a hurting soul she wouldn't find any answers in the depths. "Shoot."

"Is there any chance I can be ready to face Sinister soon?" They had to find Sinister quickly or she would lose the chance for her answers. She was going to a hard enough trying to convince the X-men to take her with them. She doubted they would let her go if she had a big belly of baby. Besides what would she do if she faced Sinister that far along? Excuse me Mr. Sinister, could we stop fighting for a second? I am having a contraction. Her humor wouldn't let that one go. New fighting technique, gross the enemy out by giving birth on their feet. Maybe she could patent it.

"Ky?" He waved a hand in front of her eyes. Her mischievous grin had him worried. "Anybody in there?"

Damn, spacing. Was she going to suffer every pregnancy malady? "Sorry, what did you say?"

"I know you want to be included but there is no way you are going to ever be able to stand toe to toe with him. If that is what you had hoped for, well, you're deluding yourself, darlin'." He patted her back in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. "I understand why you want to go. If we're lucky we'll be able to tap into his files and you'd be an asset there. But there's no way you're ready to confront Sinister or his Marauders. That kind of combat takes years of building skills."

Okay, he just told her she was going to be useless. He could have lessen the blow by not bruising her back. Stop! Back the bitching truck up. This is Logan, straightforward and honest. She had been deluding herself. She was a computer geek not a ninja. Use what you got, girl.

She looked away from the waters to Logan's face. He was studying her intently. "It's all right. I guess I was being unrealistic. I just hate feeling like Sinister is pulling my strings. Pinocchio had it better."

"No one likes t' feels dat way, p'tite.'

"Remy!" She spun around on her bottom and spotted him a few feet behind them. "How long have you been there?"

"Relax, kid. He just got there." He pulled a cigar out and lit up. "You want somethin' Gumbo?"

"Henri wants t' see you, chere. Been lookin' for you."

She held her hand up to him. Remy took the hand and helped her to her feet. "Thanks" She turned back toward the dock and leaned to whisper something in Logan's ear before joining Remy in the walk back to the mansion.

Curiosity was vibrating through him, curiosity and a bit of jealousy. If Logan was training her how come he was finding them taking in romantic little spots lately?

"Did Hank tell you what he wanted to see me for?"

"No."

She released the breath she hadn't know she had been holding. After the ultrasound, she had been too stunned to ask him not to say anything about her maternal state.

"What you talkin' t' Wolverine about?" He hoped the question was nonchalant.

"He told me that I wasn't ready to exchange hostilities with Sinister." She grabbed his hand and tugged him to a stop. "I have been feeling helpless. I mean, you guys are the X-men, and I'm here, a nobody, waiting for rescue. It doesn't sit well with me. Talking to Logan helps me sort it out. I... I... I can't explain it better than that."

"Don't worry, cherie. We work it out." He put his arms around her and held her tight. He would make sure things worked out for them.

Kyler buried her face in his shirt savoring his warmth and scent. She really hoped he was right. At least about this Sinister stuff because they had a lot more to work out than he knew. To be continued
