A Breath Of Fresh Air

by Suzene Campos

The first day I saw you
I thought, "Trouble."
From trouble to challenge
From challenge to puzzle
From puzzle to lover and equal
A sarcastic and world-wise
Cynical and smoke-tinged
Breath of fresh air
In the idealist atmosphere
I'd inhaled for years

A demon made me a warrior
Time made me an adult
You made me a woman
No one ever told me
Never told me it could feel like this
And my body yearns for yours often
But it's more than my flesh
You say you love all of me
My mind
My heart
My spirit
He never told me that
And I want to believe you

But still...

Sometimes at night
I gaze at you and wonder
Could you really love someone like me?
With all of your experiance
Could you love a woman-child?
Then I see your eyes
When you don't think I'm looking
And I can tell you're afraid
You think I'll slip away
Or that they'll turn me against you
And I smile and I know you love me
So get out of those clothes and prove it
You stupid git
