Pietro Maximoff, a.k.a. Quicksilver, followed his father out of the infirmary. "Father is everything alright?" he asked.
Pietro observed his father very carefully. His shoulders were hunched over, his head bowed slightly down, and he was walking very slowly. His whole appearance looked tired and worn down. Pietro placed a hand on his shoulder. "Father?" he asked again.
"I will be in the war room if I am needed," Magneto said brushing his son's hand off.
Pietro sighed. He rarely saw his father like this. This time was going to be worse than the others. He could already tell by the way he was acting. "Pietro," he heard from behind him. He turned to see Clarice Ferguson, the youngest member of the X-men.
"Yes Clarice," he said.
"Is Magneto okay?" she asked as she watched him turn the corner. "He's fine Clarice. He just needs some rest," Pietro lied. He knew exactly what was wrong with his father. He was wondering if the dream was worth fighting for anymore.
"Computer open mission log. Begin new entry. Quicksilver, Storm, Sabretooth, Wildchild Blink and I went to evacuate San Francisco of all remaining human inhabitants. We were to bring them to a cargo ship in what was once Oregon. The ship was to then bring them to Europe and safety. The infinites came earlier than expected and the evacuation was ruined. Storm and Wildchild were injured but are now in stable condition," Magneto said. "End log."
He slumped down into the chair and stared at the computer screen. It had the plans for the mission he had just come back from. It was to be simple. With Blinks powers evacuating the 300 humans would take a little over three hours. The infinites were not suppose to even be in the area for another week. Magneto clicked the mouse onto the next screen and a picture of a man appeared. He was their contact. He was to bring all the humans to the old church on Smith St. for the evacuation. Magneto's eyes narrowed as he remembered the days past events.
Storm floated ahead of the group to scan the area. Magneto watched her fly around the corner of some buildings and then heard her scream. He floated towards the buildings with Quicksilver and the others in close pursuit. He saw Storm lying on the ground. She was bleeding. Magneto extended his magnetic bubble to her and picked her up. She was unconscious but breathing.
He looked up and saw Unus and his troop of infinites standing in a line. Then his eyes fell on their contact. The man looked at Unus and said," See. I told you they were coming." Magneto knew then that they had been betrayed.
Magneto sighed and turned the screen off. The man had betrayed them even though they were trying to save his life. What was the point in fighting to stop Apocalypse destroying the humans when they didn't even want the help? He realized he had no reason to continue to fight. Magneto slowly rose and walked towards his room. Maybe he was stupid to have fought for the dream in the first place. He entered the room and heard a small whimper in coming from the crib. He looked to see if Rogue was around but she wasn't there. Magneto ignored the crying at first but it became louder and more insistent.
He groaned and walked over to the crib. His youngest son Charles lay in the crib crying. Magneto picked him up. The crying ceased. He sat on the bed rocking the child to try to get him back to sleep. Magneto wasn't in the mood to be doing this. He wanted to sleep right now. He went to put Charles back into the crib. As soon as he began to lay him down he began to cry. Magneto sighed and picked him up again. "Your not going to let me put you down are you?" Magneto said looking at his son.
The little boy looked up at him. His mouth opened and Magneto expected to here one of his normal cooing sounds emerge. "Dada," Charles said.
Magneto's eyes widened as he looked down at the little boy. "What?" Magneto said astonished.
Charles green eyes began to close and he repeated the word. "Dada," he said and then shut his eyes. Magneto smiled. He finally found his reason for fighting for the dream. He heard the door swoosh open and turned to see Rogue walk in. He gave her a smile.
"Ah was just talkin' ta Pietro and he was tellin' me how depressed ya looked. So how come ya face is lit up like a Christmas tree all of the sudden?" Rogue asked.
"He called me dada," Magneto said.
Rogue smiled. She knew then that she wouldn't have to try and talk to him about the dream being worth fighting for.
